Ominous Flaky Owls with #BalanceRewards #Cbias

Walgreens now has Balance Rewards! (Be sure to follow them on Twitter and Facebook to stay up to date on the latest and greatest!) Now, you can save money by earning points with your Walgreens Loyalty Card and earn money back! (Hey, I’m excited!) We use Walgreens for all of our medication needs – prescriptions and over the counter medication needs. They tend to be my one stop shop when it comes to loading up on medications for the entire family so I’m happy to know that I can earn money back on my purchases.

The family and I went this weekend to sign up for Walgreens Rewards, pick up a medication I need for my PUP’s and shop for some Halloween ideas. (Check out our shopping trip!)

I usually like making a graveyard cake for the Halloween season and was on a mission to purchase everything I needed and I had a back up recipe to try that my mother in law had just introduced me to days before – Ominous Flaky Owls.

Unfortunately, I did not have much luck in getting everything I needed for my graveyard cake, but I did manage to get the things I needed for my owls. And the kids had a great time playing with the noise making Halloween decorations!

This guy sang AND danced!

I was a little disappointed. Not only was my prescription not ready, but I had a really difficult time finding items we were looking for that we could earn points. I was hoping to nab 500 points for my prescription, but I did manage to find my cake mix for 500 points and the kids and hubby got a drink and snacks which gave me another 500 points. Unfortunately, after returning home, I noticed I was missing some points from my receipt (which I’m okay with because it just means I get to go back to rake up more points! Yes, I am a point fanatic!) With the Loyalty program being so new, I am sure there are still some bugs being worked out!

We noticed that the products that did offer points were labeled like this cake mix:

Notice the tag says 500 points?

The soda and snack the hubby and kids got was a special, so there was a flier on the soda display case door. Overall, finding which products had points were pretty easy to find if you knew what you were looking for!

Oh, and a bonus, I got an email a couple of days later stating that they have linked my online Walgreens account with my Balance Rewards account for easier access!

And while I could not gather everything I need for my cake baking, I did manage to make the kids the Ominous Flaky Owls that they were overly excited to see (and eat!)

Ominous Flaky Owls
(adapted from Walmart)

Ingredients:
1 can (8 ounces) Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls
6-8 Goldfish crackers (recipe calls for pretzel, but we used regular cheddar)
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon butter or margarine, melted
12-16 M&M’s

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Remove dough from can, but do not unroll!
With a serrated knife, cut roll into 16 slices (I only got 13).
For each owl, place 2 rolls next to each other so they are touching sides.
Unroll a 2 inch strip from each roll (my odd number roll was used for this purpose).
Take the 2 inch strip and fold in half, pinching the dough together at the fold so you form points (these will be the owl horns).
Place the folded dough at the top, where the 2 rolls meet.
Place 1 goldfish cracker into the bottom center, pressing into the dough (this is the owl beak).
Repeat with all rolls until you have 6-8 owls.
In a small bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon together.
Brush each owl with melted butter.
Sprinkle each owl with the cinnamon/sugar mixture.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until light brown (I accidentally left mine in a couple minutes too long!)
Once you remove from oven, immediately place an M&M into the center of each roll (the owl’s eyes).
Let cool completely before serving.
