Rock of Ages Movie Review

Rock of Ages Rock of Ages Movie Review

I am going to be 100% honest here. I had zero, zilch, nada, absolutely no intentions of watching Rock of Ages. I hadn’t heard much about it other than it was a Tom Cruise movie (and I am no Tom Cruise fan as of late). I literally had no desire to watch it and I had no idea what it was about.

When I was provided the opportunity to watch it and review it, I figured, it couldn’t hurt, right?

Right!

I was embarrassed that I had to ask if it was a musical, but I was informed that yes, indeed, it was a musical. According to IMDB (my fave go-to source for all things television and movie), Rock of Ages is a comedy, drama, musical and romance. The comedy wasn’t a lot, but when it was there – it was there (hubby was literally laughing out loud at the comedic parts). The drama wasn’t bad, definitely a musical and a good romance, but not a chick flick romance (at least I didn’t think so!)

It had an impressive cast: Julianne Hough (Dancing with the Stars, Footloose); Diego Boneta (90210, Pretty Little Liars); Russell Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek); Alec Baldwin (30 Rock); Tom Cruise (Top Gun, Mission Impossible); Mary J. Blige (singer, guest coach this year on The Voice); Catherine Zeta Jones (Chicago, The Legend of Zorro) and Paul Giamatti (Duets, Big Fat Liar). It also has some great cameos, although I only recognized two: Constantine Maroulis (best known as an American Idol Season 4 contestant) and Sebastian Bach (former lead singer of Skid Row).

I’m going to admit, the story line… wasn’t the greatest. There were a couple story lines to follow and they were predictable, but the music, oh, the music. Great, fabulous 80′s music! Being a gal born in the 80′s, I loved it! Hubby loved it! We both agreed newer generations probably wouldn’t get it because it’s not the music they are used to, but dang, we loved the music and cannot wait for the soundtrack to come out!

Overall, I would give this a 4 out of 5 stars! We cannot wait to watch it again and are already fighting over who get the soundtrack in their vehicle!

Rock of Ages DVD and soundtrack are available for sale October 9th 2012 at Best Buy.

  1. I went to watch this recently with a friend (who chose the movie) and I’m not a fan of musicals and didn’t realise it was a musical until it started. It turned out to actually be quite fun! The story was predictable but I thought the music was great!

  2. Actors need to realize that their actions affect whether or not I’ll ever watch a movie of theirs. Tom Cruise included. I tried, I really tried to watch Rock of Ages but I could not get past the first 15 minutes before shutting it off.

  5. I wasn’t sure if I’d want to watch this either, because I am not a Tom Cruise fan in the least, and haven’t been since I was like 12, but if the music is good, I’ll rent it! :)
