Buggy “graduated” the first grade and will be starting second grade in August.
Buddy will be entering Kindergarten in August and it will be his first schooling experience (and for the record, he is not happy about it!)
With summer vacation, I didn’t want Buggy to fall behind and “un-learn” what she learned in first grade and I wanted to prepare her for second grade. With Buddy, he is behind as is with not having gone to preschool, so I wanted to set some time aside each day to help him learn to prepare him for Kindergarten. Which is why I developed our summer learning program!
Buggy was doing well on her math and excellent on her reading so I wanted to focus on her math more and also have her do more writing. Her summer learning program will be as follows:
Monday
– Math worksheets
Tuesday
– Reading
Wednesday
– Math worksheets
Thursday
– Reading
Friday
– Writing
Each day she will work for 30 minutes minimum. I found a great website to print free math worksheets and will work between the first grade and second grade sections to refresh what she has already learned and prepare her for second grade.
Twice a week, she will have to read for a minimum of 30 minutes. She has taken a fond liking to the Junie B books and we will be purchasing more for her to work on this summer since they are perfect for her reading. She is also starting to like the Magic Tree House series too (she is 7 so if you have a 7 year old – these are good starters!)
On Fridays, she will write a letter to a family member; either grandma here in Arizona, grandma in Minnesota, or other family members. This will help her with her writing skills and her spelling.
Because Buddy is behind, his schedule will be a little different and require much more hands on with mommy and daddy (but I can’t wait to help him learn!)
His schedule will be similar to the following:
Monday
– Letters
Tuesday
– Numbers
Wednesday
– Writing
Thursday
– Letters/Numbers Review
Friday
– Writing
I have purchased a few different workbooks for him to learn his letters, numbers, and practice writing letters and numbers. He will work on learning his letters, learning his ABCs, learning his numbers, learning to count higher than 15, writing his letters and numbers, and learning to write his name. All things to prepare him for Kindergarten.
Again, his schedule will be for a minimum of 30 minutes, Monday through Friday.
I think it’s important that kids have summer vacation and have fun, but I also think it’s important to keep their minds engaged. A half an hour per day is not much to help them keep their minds active and refreshed.
What does your summer learning program look like?
