Recently, I have taken to Twitter for social interaction. (You can find me on Twitter

I am trying to be much more social and utilize Twitter more. In fact, over the weekend, hubby and I were watching and tweeting about the World Baseball Classic games and hubby won tickets to the USA versus Canada game that was here locally in Phoenix. Being interactive on Twitter has its benefits, but if you are not utilizing Twitter effectively, you may be losing followers.

Originally, my train of thought was that as a blogger, I will follow every person who follows me. Unfortunately, this led to the thousands of giveaways being pimped, sweepers, and other random tweeters that were clogging my feed so I was missing out on important tweets. (It is really hard to be interactive on Twitter when all you see is giveaways and not much interaction elsewhere.)

I took to my fellow bloggers to see what they look for when following others and came up with a few reasons on why you may be losing or not gaining followers on Twitter.

“Eggs are only for eating”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. If you do not take the time to upload a profile image, chances are, others will not follow you. Personally, I don’t care if it’s a blog button, a self image, an image of your children, or even an image of something totally random. Anything but the darn egg.

Who Are You?

See that little blurb description? If yours is blank, people don’t know who you are, what you do, or why they should be following you. If it’s blank, chances are, they won’t follow you. They don’t have a reason to follow you because they don’t know who you are.

Besides, a profile image and a description show that you are a person who took the time to show others who you are.

“Sweeps”

If the word “sweeps” is in your twitter handle or description, chances are, you aren’t going to gain any followers. Which maybe you are okay with because that Twitter handle is just for entering giveaways, contests and sweepstakes, but remember, at some point, you won’t be able to follow anymore people because you’ll have reached your follow limit and not have any followers yourself.

These are just a few of the things I have found others look for when following on Twitter.
