I live in the desert. Dry, dirty, dusty desert where every year, we have “monsoon season” which equals massive dust storms that blow dust and sand throughout the city. (We actually had our first dust storm of the season on Thursday night!)
On top of living in the desert, I live in an older home (that we rent) that doesn’t have the best sealing powers therefore dust gets into our home fairly often either from the dust storms, or from our dog running around in the back yard.
It wasn’t until my son contracted
, that I really started paying attention to the indoor air quality of our home.
Valley Fever is caused by a fungus that lives in the soil and dust in some southwest states such as here in Arizona. When you breath it in, it can impact your lungs and cause flu like symptoms or sometimes worse if it actually gets into your lungs.
Fortunately for us, Buddy just experience a really rare rash on both of his legs that lasted for several weeks and appeared at two different times. His case was not severe to warrant treatment, but it definitely made me more aware of the indoor air quality of our home.
Improving Indoor Air Quality
To improve our indoor air quality,
dusting is done quite often
. Between the dust storms and the dog, there is usually a good layer of sand, dirt, and dust in our home so dusting and wiping everything down is a frequent occurrence.
Vacuuming
occurs just as often.
We are slowly
re-sealing the doors and windows
in the home to prevent the dust storms from coming indoors.
Changing our air filters frequently
and cleaning them in between changes has also become routine.
We change our air filters on a monthly basis and then mid month, we usually clean them.
This particular air filter was placed at the beginning of June and was cleaned/vacuumed about two weeks ago. You can see that we get quite the build up of dust.
This month, we are replacing our usual air filters with
.
Filtrete Filters help improve indoor air quality by capturing dust, pollen, and lint from the air passing through the filter. They also help maintain an efficient heating and cooling system (which is important when you live in the desert!)
Whether it is the dust and dirt from outside that you are trying to control, or pet dander, dust mites, etc. Filtrete Filters can help improve indoor air quality.
