Please note, this post is 100% my own opinion. You do not have to agree with what I am saying. I agree that we can all disagree. This is just my opinion. (Keyword: MY opinion)
Previous to last week, I was working two different part time jobs in the same office. One was a long term contractor position, the other was an employee/employer position. Unfortunately, I was given a semi-notice that my contractor position would be ending some time after the end of February (I was lucky to drag it out as long as I did) and the employee/employer position gave me a one day notice (that’s a whole other topic within itself). So, I have been out of employment for about a week and a half.
I have been trying to find work either in the administrative field as that is what I have been doing the past 6 years, or do behavioral health/mental health as I have experience in the field and it goes with my degree and current education.
With that said, I cannot believe how many jobs require (keyword: require) bilingual applicants. Now, before I begin, let me start off by saying that I am not racist. I don’t care if you are blue, yellow, orange, pink or purple. I don’t care if
in the privacy of your home
you speak gibberish, Pig-latin, or some alien language. By all means. What I
do
have a problem with, is that I cannot get a job because my sole language is English. Let me expand on my thoughts.
I live in the United States. The primary language is English (well, was and should be). I do not travel to Mexico and expect the populants of Mexico to speak English, clearly they will speak their native language. I do not go to Germany and expect them to speak English, they will speak their native language of German. My point is that I do not require populants of another country to bend their ways to accommodate my English language. I am in their country, therefore, I should speak their language. I expect the same type of respect here in the U.S.
I cannot understand how I am not good enough to apply or can get turned down from a job because I do not speak any other language than English (I have ran into both of these situations in the past week). Let me repeat this one more time: I live in the United States and speak English. Those who visit here or live here should speak English. I should not be consequenced for speaking my native language just as if I were to come to your country, I would not expect you to be consequenced for speaking your native language, nor would I expect you to learn English to communicate with me. I am in your country, I speak your native language. Do the same here.
PS: This is not a racial post and is not directed at one race or language because surprisingly, I was asked (and turned down for a position) because I did not speak a language I had never even heard of. So please do not take this post and throw a race card- it is irrelevant.
