{DIY} Summer Hair Cut – Life as Leels

I can never decide on the length I want my hair to be. Ever since I was in third grade I have gone from long to short, back and forth, constantly. Since moving to Arizona, I tend to “grow it out” in the winter (you know, the whole 3 months of winter we have) and then in summer, I keep it short.

This year is no different.

It’s only June and already we are seeing triple digit heat which meant my shoulder length locks had to go.

The last time I chopped it all off, I went to a hair cutting place and paid the $12 plus tip to the person for them to cut my hair super short. When it needed to be cut again (because my hair grows super fast when it’s short), I again paid the $12 plus tip for them to take their clippers and using the biggest shield, cut my hair.

What!?

Did I seriously just pay $17 for them to use clippers to cut my hair?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not completely cheap, but I was having to go every 3 weeks to get my hair re-cut because it was growing that fast. And I kept the ‘do for well over a year. Add that up – that’s over $200 to keep my hair short.

This time, I decided I would do it myself.

To me, hair is hair and it will always grow back (unless your hubby, then your just outta luck!) I really can’t go “too short”. So, hubby and I pulled out our clippers, grabbed the 8 shield (the one inch, largest shield) and gave me my own summer hair cut.

I did most of it myself before having hubby come out and clean up any spots I missed.

Hubby also used the clippers without a shield to straighten out the back and clean up around the ears. We used scissors to grab any lose hairs we found that got completely missed. All in all, start to finish, was less than a half hour and cost me nothing.

Personally I haven’t decided if it’s too long still, but I’m playing with it to try different styles. If you decide it’s still too long, you have 7 other shields at various sizes to try! I recommend just keep going down shield by shield until you find a length that you are happy with.

The best part?

My routine now consists of washing (which takes less time than it does with long hair), running a towel over it (it dries much faster than long hair), throwing some gel into it, spraying it in place (I hate when my spikes fall!) and I’m out the door. I literally just cut my 30 minute morning routine down to about 15-20 minutes!
