Mommy Confession:

I do not allow my kids access to the computers at home.

Short of the fact that all 3 of my part time jobs require the computer, there is something about the internet and my kids that frightens me.

I wouldn’t classify myself as “helicopter mom”. I prefer to let my kids learn through their own mistakes and to try things; I feel we learn best that way, but allowing my 6 year old and my 8 year old access to the scary world wide web? I’m not so sure about that.

Because the internet wasn’t really a big thing until I was a teenager… like junior high, high school teenager (I feel old!) I never got “the internet talk”. And let’s be real, the internet wasn’t as great as it is now and cyber bullying, invasion of privacy, and everything else wasn’t as big of a risk as it is now (at least I don’t remember it being that big of a risk!)

I know (and am well aware) that I need to become a #cybersafe parent and allow my kids to use the internet. I mean, let’s be real, I’m not sure you can survive in today’s world without the internet!

Fortunately, Boys and Girls Club of America have a new initiative –
.

The Boys and Girls Club of America have a
that has resources for parents, a quiz to see if you are a #cybersafe parent, and a weekly Q & A with the teen #CyberTribe.

The resources include privacy, cyber bullying, mobile technology and social media – all things that are important to talk to our kids about before embarking on the internet. There are also other resources listed on the side for parents, kids, tweens, teens, and even teachers.

There is even an additional resource tab just for your teen as well which I think is fabulous.

My favorite part of the entire site is the teen CyberTribe and the weekly Q & A.

I may feel old and I guess, in the eyes of a teen, I may be old, but a lot has changed since I was on the internet as a teen so it is nice to be able to ask questions that are geared towards my kids (who are soon to be pre-teen and teenagers before my eyes) and get answers from teenagers themselves.

Try it out!

Head on over to the
and visit the “ask the CyberTribe” tab.

Click “ask now”, write your question, fill out your information, and click submit!

The bonus?

If you submit a question, you have the option to be entered into a drawing for a mini iPad giveaway.

It is important that we talk to our kids about being cyber safe, maintaining their privacy (and the privacy of others), how to interact on social media (and how to use it properly), and to know that what goes out on the internet cannot be easily taken back.

I am thankful to have found
and will be putting it to use as I prepare my kids (and myself) for using the internet – and will definitely share with my friends who are in the similar situation.

What is one important thing you can share with me (to share with my kids) regarding cyber safety?
