Writing Tips from Author Susie Kinslow Adams

“I think I should write a book about….”

“Several people tell me my life story would make a good book. Someday I am going to write it.”

Quite often after someone learns I am an author, the conversation turns to their ideas for a book or story. Many have held onto dreams of writing for years and never penned the first page. How sad to think of the untold stories that are lost forever because no one took the time to share them. With this in mind, I choose to address my tips to the very beginning writer (and the seasoned ones that may need a reminder of the basics).

Here are three very basic thoughts I would challenge any would-be writer to heed.

#1 The best advice any potential writer could ever receive is simply do it—write! Keep a notebook handy at all times, a small one that will fit in your pocket or purse and a larger one at home, work, or in your car. Make it your intention to write your thoughts as they come to you. Do not worry about what you will do with any of those pages, just fill them. Do not worry about the grammar, sentence structure or any other writing challenge you may feel you have. It is your job for the present to simply obey your heart and write.

#2 When possible, write enough to complete your thoughts of the moment. From vast experience, I have learned that cold ink does not compute! The notes I have that are totally meaningless would fill a huge box. Some, I can tell, were written with great feeling and determination but now lead down a one-way road to nowhere. Jot down where you were or what you were doing when you had those thoughts, it will help your story later.

#3 Keep your notes, all of them. When I began forming chapters for my book, I literally cut and pasted paper notes so I could see the book take shape. I knew I would have eight chapters and ended up with twelve. I kept each page and the tiniest of notes not included in the book and have used much of those writings for short articles or in my speaking. Even when writing or speaking about another topic, these papers have proven invaluable to perk my creative juices.

Fantastic, challenging stories have sailed away on the ship of good intentions; don’t let it happen to you! Gather up your pen and paper and let me hear from you at
