What is Mama Cloth?
Plain and simple.
They are cloth menstrual pads.
Personally, I hadn’t really heard of them (or given them much thought) until I started cloth diapering. I mean, I have heard of the menstrual cups (and
), but the thought of mama cloth didn’t really register until I started buying cloth diapers.
While I was buying Lil Miss cloth diapers (you know, to save money and be more eco-friendly) it kind of felt like a slap upside the head.
Why in Pete’s sake was I spending all this money buying disposable pads and tampons and filling the landfills!? Why couldn’t I use cloth like I am for the baby’s bottom!?
Hence, my search for mama cloth.
As of present, I have tried three different “brands” of mama cloth (although I must admit, two of the “brands” had similar styles).
Brand A had a satin type cloth on the backside with more of a microfiber type absorbent fabric on the “pad” side. My problem with these was that they moved all the time! Literally, one minute they were inching to my belly button and the next it was sneaking up my backside!
Brand B was very similar, but instead of the satin side, it was minky with more of a charcoal bamboo type fabric on the “pad” side. Again, I had trouble keeping them from moving every which way. (Which really, I cannot be walking around with my hands down my pants readjusting my menstrual pad!)
Brand C has been the most recent mama cloth I have tried –
– and thus far, much better than the first two “brands”.
Pink Lemonade has a minky back with a water resistant windpro fleece lines the backs and bamboo fleece is used in the absorbent core. And the best part – they didn’t move all over the place!
The one thing I noticed between the Pink Lemonade mama cloth and the other brands were the shapes. Pink Lemonades had more of a pad like contour with snaps where as the other brands were strict rectangles with snaps. (Literally just a thick rectangle piece of fabric on top of another rectangle piece of fabric.)
I can’t fully attest to the absorbency with them for two reasons – (a) my period decided to come 2 weeks early while I was out of town so I was not prepared, and (b) I wear pads as a cup/tampon back up. I can tell you that when washing the pads, these were very absorbent. I could feel the water in the absorbent core, but the fleece lining felt dry.
I felt comfortable wearing my pads from Pink Lemonade and wasn’t afraid to leave the house and worry about where the pad would travel.
Other things I liked about Pink Lemonade were the different color and design choices (not that anyone else sees them, but still, we women still like our things to look nice), the different sizes and the different absorbency offered. We know that women are not “one size fits all” and Pink Lemonade offers a selection to fit individual likes and needs.
