Growing up, I spent a lot of time at my grandparent’s house.
One of the things I remember best about being there is the cooking we did together.
There is no better recipe than one you make with grandma or grandpa so I was excited to pull out of the old memory bank a recipe that I haven’t made since I was really young with my grandma.
Grandma’s Ham Salad
There are different variations of this recipe, but this is my grandma’s.
Ingredients:
Hot dogs
Pickles
Miracle Whip
Sugar
Milk
Onions, optional
Celery, optional
Since Safeway is having a Buy 3, Save 3 on Hillshire Farm products, I purchased Ball Park beef franks which fit the bill perfectly.

Directions:
Place the entire pack of unwrapped hot dogs into your food processor. Back when I would make this with my grandma, we used an old fashion meat grinder that you attached to the counter. Unfortunately, since I don’t have that, my food processor worked just fine.
Process the hot dogs to a broken down consistency, but not a smooth consistency. You want something similar to this:
Once you reached the desired consistency, remove it from the food processor into a tupperware container large enough to placed the remaining ingredients and provide you enough room to mix it up.
Next, you want to process your pickles. I used to large, whole pickles and that was perfect. Again, you don’t want a smooth puree.
Once you reached desired consistency, mix in with the hot dog mixture.
If you are using onions or celery for an added crunch (I prefer not to) you would then process each of these to a desired consistency to add to the mixture.
Next, you want to make the “sauce”. If you notice, the mixture looks pretty dry right now. The “sauce” you want to make will have a hint of sweetness.
In a separate bowl, put a scoop or two of Miracle Whip. (I used a large size silverware spoon and used two scoops for mine, but I like a creamier mixture. If you want a dryer mixture, I would suggest one scoop.)
Next, add milk. There really is no accurate measurement. I would say a tablespoon, give or take. You want to make the Miracle Whip creamy.
Add about a half tablespoon of sugar to the Miracle Whip and milk mixture. Again, we’re looking for a more sweet rather than tangy taste.
Once you have a desired taste and creaminess, mix it into your pickle and hot dog mixture.
Voila! Grandma’s ham salad sandwich recipe!
