Did anyone else start feeling the tingly sensation of anger starting to rise up just by reading that? I know when I read it on the front page of Yahoo- I certainly did. I was ready to rumble.
Now, before I get into this post, let me just say that I own a pit bull. She is a member of our family. She is my baby and I love her to pieces. My pit bull now (Jessie) lives with hubby and I, our two kids, and our two cats. She is a sweet heart and so long as me or my kids are not in danger, she really is a big baby.
I have fought tooth and nail to advocate for my dog and pit bulls alike. I despise when people make their ignorant comments about owning a pit bull or having a pit bull in the same home as my children. I despise the bad reputation the pit bull breed has. I will say this once:
a dog’s personality is based on how you raise them- NOT their breed.
I am sure if I wanted Jessie to be an attack dog and fight, I would raise her that way and so she would be, but I choose to raise her as a member of our family and that is what she is. The same applies to children. If I want my children to grow up rough and tough and bully everyone, I would, but do parents choose to do this? No. It’s all in a matter of how you raise anything. Period.
I was actually shocked when I took a look at said headline
. The description immediately caught my eye: “Mastiffs might seem dangerous after one recently bit a news anchor, but they’re often gentle giants”. Hmmm… maybe this article won’t bad talk my dog… not likely, but maybe. I mean, let’s face it, have you ever read a normal article, written by someone that wasn’t an advocate of pit bulls, that was positive?
I was in awe to see that in the first top half of the page- the second and third paragraphs even- there was no bad talk! And I quote: “Some breeds of dogs are thought to be dangerous when in reality, any dog can be a danger to you and your family if the situation is right or they are provoked… The pit bull has been given a bad rap for years because of their use in dog-fighting rings, but those that are bred as pets can be just as loving as any Cocker Spaniel. Ignorance of the breed perpetuates the myth… Don’t dismiss any breed on the basis of media hype only”. AMEN!
I am so happy that someone else gets it! Words cannot even begin to explain how happy I am to see such a positive post that rings true! Thank you to the author of that article for having a voice for my dog and other mis-labeled dog breeds!
