Susan G. Komen vs. Planned Parenthood
Please note, this is my opinion and my opinion only.
I read the news almost every evening before bed. I enjoy reading through the headlines. It makes me feel like I am a knowledgeable member of society (even though I’m probably far from it!). Last night, while doing my headline browsing, I took note of the headline that read
. It peeked my interest so I read on.
In essence, the overall summary of the story is that Susan G. Komen, who in the past has funded Planned Parenthood with hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants, is no longer going to fund Planned Parenthood because of the current legal battle that Planned Parenthood is in.
Here is what I have to say:
I am somewhat torn. I am a somewhat advocate of Planned Parenthood
because
they have helped me when I needed it. Please note that I say somewhat. I do not support their abortion tactics or abortion itself, but Planned Parenthood offers many more services than just abortion and that is what people need to realize and understand. Planned Parenthood is not just an abortion clinic. They are a clinic that offers a variety of services to individuals who cannot afford to go to a standard medical doctor for whatever reason.
As for my supporting Planned Parenthood; when I got pregnant with my daughter, it was not planned and I was not insured. When I got pregnant with my son, I was not insured because I worked for a private company and was going the route of paying a midwife rather than do the doctor business. Planned Parenthood offered the free pregnancy tests I needed to A) get insurance with my daughter and B) prove my pregnancy with my son. I strongly believe that Planned Parenthood offers a wide variety of support and resources to those who may not otherwise be able to afford what they need. Case in point, they offer breast exams. Susan G. Komen’s goal is early detection, prevention, and the cure for breast cancer. Planned Parenthood provides breast exams that support the goals of Susan G. Komen. While I understand that the Susan G. Komen Foundation does not support companies and what not who are embroiled in a legal battle, it needs to understand that Planned Parenthood is supportive of their cause and helps people who are less fortunate and cannot afford standard medical insurance.
Overall, I think Susan G. Komen will find that they are hindering their efforts by pulling funding from Planned Parenthood. Again, just my opinion. To each their own, right?
