The Root of Murder by Lauren Carr {Book Review}
Homicide Detective Cameron Gates learned long ago that there is no such thing as a typical murder case. Each mystery is special in its own right—especially for the family of the victim.The homicide of a successful executive, husband, and father seems open and shut when the murder weapon is found in his estranged son-in-law’s possession. The circumstantial evidence is so damning that when her step-son, J.J. Thornton, agrees to act as the defendant’s public defender, he assumes his first murder case will be a loss. Only the report of a missing husband proves that this case is not as open and shut as it seems. Strap on your seat belts for a wild ride in this mystery rooted in decades of deception that sprouts into murder.

One third of the way through the book, I have it figured out. Wait. I think. Well… no, not really. I mean… I have four suspects. But that doesn’t really make sense because one witness says two, but there is a third character that has to fit into that pair so then where do they fit in? But it could be…

Yeah, let’s be real. There is a 99.9% chance I am so off base, it would be comical if I said it out loud. It’s one of the reasons I love Lauren Carr’s mysteries. I never have it figured out. I may have a hunch, but I don’t EVER have it figured out.

And I didn’t. Wasn’t even close. Never saw it coming.

There is always a cast of characters which means tons of suspects to choose from. And there usually is more than one crime but somehow, they always link to each other.

I think the one aspect of this book that I liked best was that it really did become a family affair – the entire Thornton family (almost) – affair.

Lauren’s books never cease to disappoint me and always leave me turning pages and guessing at every clue. Hands down, one of the best mystery writers! Better yet; no matter the order or the time between books, I never feel lost! (I have read several out of order and have never felt like I missed a piece of a story!)
