Writing Tips From Author – Angela Joseph

Nowadays I believe every writer knows that writing a story, essay or novel is just a small achievement on the road to writing success. After you have completed your masterpiece, you have to get people to read it, unless you wrote it just for your family. And that’s where the real work begins. So here are some tips on how you can make it in this daunting, oftentimes scary world of writing.

1. Know your audience.

Many writers, and I count myself among them, set out to write a book without knowing who their audience is going to be. That’s a recipe for failure right there. If you’re unsure who your audience is, your writing will lack focus. You can’t write about everything you know in one book. Narrow it down to one subject and you’ll hook your audience. If you study books by famous authors, they all deal with one topic. To give an example, in John Grisham’s The Partner, all the book contains is an account about an attorney who made off with his colleagues’ money. They searched for him, found him and brought him to face justice. End of story.

2. Study the markets

This is another mistake many newbies make. They may have written a good book, but then they waste time and suffer a lot of frustration by sending it to the wrong markets. I have received many rejections because I didn’t take the time to go to the agent’s or publisher’s websites and look at the kinds of books they buy. Sometimes I would select an agent from a list that accepts submissions in the genre in which I’m writing. I’ve learned that is not enough. Some agents’ guidelines are pretty vague. If you don’t understand something, call and ask.

3. Write like a pro

What does this mean? There’s no magical formula separating the way the pros write from the way others write. True, the pros may be blessed with some talent and they may have taken some courses, but many of them hone their skills by writing, attending conferences and hobnobbing with other writers. Pros also do extensive revision of their work. The first draft is just a diamond in the rough. A diamond has to be polished to perfection before anyone will buy it. The same thing goes for your work. You have to rewrite and polish until your words dazzle even you. Then you would have made the crossover from artisan to artist and you’ll achieve good results.
